Outdoor basketball courts: the city ranking

29 October 2026 · Sports

Athens is the city with the most basketball courts mapped on OpenStreetMap: 408 within 5 km of the centre, followed by Soacha (306) and New York (271).

The court around the corner is where many people learned to play. We counted the basketball courts mapped on OpenStreetMap around the centre of 2,400 cities worldwide, all within the same 5 km circle.

How we counted

We counted the places in the “Basketball courts” category in the SpotyMap database, which comes from OpenStreetMap (data from 21 October 2026), within a 5 km circle around the centre of each city (78.5 km²). The ranking includes cities with at least 250,000 inhabitants and capitals. If a city's centre falls inside the circle of another city already in the ranking, it isn't counted twice.

These numbers show how many places have been mapped on OpenStreetMap, not how many really exist: in some cities volunteers have mapped almost everything, in others a lot is still missing. If you know a place that isn't there, you can add it to OpenStreetMap: it will show up in SpotyMap after the next data update.

Find them near you

On SpotyMap you'll find “Basketball courts” and 59 other categories of useful places, all over the world, starting from where you are. Some courts have opening hours: if you find a locked gate, check the notices.
